Waterloo Region Indoor Clubs

Our mission is formed from an assessment of capacity in Waterloo Region:

  • The Region of Waterloo has 3 main cities: Kitchener, Cambridge and Waterloo
  • Waterloo has two (2) indoor tennis clubs: Waterloo TC, and Greystone TC
  • Waterloo TC currently operates at full capacity with a wait list of 1200 (as of 2023)
  • Greystone TC requires a large initiation fee beyond what most players can afford
  • Kitchener and Cambridge have no indoor tennis facilities
  • Most tennis players in Kitchener and Cambridge cannot play winter tennis

City of Cambridge Clubs

All of TennisCambridge clubs are on Cambridge city-owned land and all of the buildings associated with the clubs are city-owned property (except GSM). All are outdoor only. There are no tennis clubs in Kitchener - only public courts.

Operation

  • All of the tennis clubs are managed by unpaid volunteers.

  • The clubs provide free lessons for beginners , run tennis camps that are open to all persons whether members or not.

  • Age is no barrier to enjoying the sport.  Many members play well into their 80’s.

Costs

Participant costs:
Membership fees are kept as low as possible to keep from being a barrier to entry.
Equipment costs are minimal, requiring only a racquet and sneakers, unlike many other sports which can require significant expenditures.

City Costs:
Facilities are run for the benefit of the citizens of Cambridge at no cost for staff, no cost for programs, no cost for routine maintenance and no cost for administration.

Objectives

Short term:
Maintain and preserve the standard of current facilities.

Long term:
Provide for the demand for recreational tennis for a growing population. The current facilities cannot meet that demand. Most players cannot play winter tennis. Eventually a centralized facility with more courts and an indoor facility will be required to meet demand.

“We need an indoor tennis club in the Waterloo region to service Cambridge and surrounding  area.”

Harry Greenan
